survey for research purposes. did not need to be done, because most of it is about code and i am stupid and don't know what i am doing.

1. Please introduce yourself.: already done. if you didn't read all that, my name is andrew and i am a misanthropist.
2. How long have you been making websites?: since november 22nd, 2025
3. And what got you into the hobby?: wanted creative freedom. something uncensored and not consumer branded smiling bullshit
4. What kind of website are you most interested in?: personal....the kind with fun stuff
5. What's your workflow? Do you plan your websites out thoroughly or do you come up with the design as you go along?: i don't plan shit. sorry
6. Please link to your biggest inspirations.: radiohead. they don't need linking to. also safe voyage
7. What's your favourite part about making websites?: the end result.
8. And the thing you struggle with the most?: coding
9. Do you keep the same layout on all of your pages? Or do you use different ones?: er..getting here probably made it obvious most of them differ from eachother. but. i still have things i do subconsciously that makes everything coherent.
10. How confident are you with CSS?: not at all confident
11. Do you know how to correctly use <dl>?: No
12. What is your favourite HTML element?: hm. div, probably. make fun of me for being basic now
13. If you're making a new web page from scratch, what is the first thing you do?: figure out what i want to make, even. begin building and look up tutorials and refine from there. i usually use an html previewer since my code is shit.
14. Do you know JavaScript?: sometimes
15. How about PHP?: no because i am an idiot
16. Does your website have a theme that you stick to?: sort of.? i don't really have one in mind per say, it is. a subconscious thing.
17. Are you more focused on content or design?: depends on the page and what it aims to do.
18. Do you own a domain name? If not, would you ever want to?: too expensive.
19. What do you think of nostalgia-focused or "retro" websites?: nostalgia is. almost always a setback. i only like "retro" stuff because i like the look. i don't care for rounded out neat javascript.
20. Is your HTML valid? Do you even check?
21. What are your opinion on buttons and banners?: i like them a lot. they are fun i think.
22. What do you think of button walls in particular?: indifferent. to each their own
23. If you started over again, would you make something similar or completely different?: i am far too indecisive and self critical to make this all over again. the only reason this website doesn't get a redesign every month is due to my own laziness
24. Are you envious of other people's websites?: sort of. envy is a bit of a strong way to put it. i like what i have built.
25. What text editor do you use?: built in neocities one. or some html previewer, as mentioned.
26. Why do you use that one?: it works.
27. Do you host your image files on your web server, or on another host?: depends. if it is already there or if it is for a large gallery i use imgur. otherwise i store stuff on here.
28. This might not be relevant to you, but what's your opinion on the Neocities vs. Nekoweb debate?: irrelevant
29. How much server space would you estimate your main website takes up?: i don't know. not much, i'd assume.
30. Do you keep local backups of your files?: no
31. Do you prefer simple or highly visual websites?: i like a mix. i lean on the more simple side but i think art and images create the aesthetic of a website.
32. Do you stick to certain colours? Do you do that on purpose, or is it your subconscious?: i have hammered it in at this point that my design choices are mainly subconscious...i lean toward warmer tones i think. i have an aversion towards colder tones. for this reason i become panicked everytime i go into a walmart.
33. Have you ever thought about quitting? Why?: this isn't a serious enough commitment to "quit"
34. Do you have many webmaster friends, or is it a solitary hobby?: very solitary.
35. Do people in your real life know about your website?: somewhat. nobody cares really
36. Do you update your website very often? How often is "very often"?: i will change text often to fit my current thoughts. actual coding i do not do often.
37. And the overall design, do you change that much? Why or why not?: i always want to. i know better
38. Is your website more you-focused, hobby-focused, or outside world-focused?: me me me. how vain
39. Do you do web design professionally?: what do you think?
40. If not, would you like to? And if you're comfortable answering, what do you do for work?: i am unemployed as of now. because i am a teenager. anyway. maybe? it isn't my passion really.
41. Do you communicate with people by email very much?: no. very bad about that.
42. Some people reject social media and use websites as a replacement. Do you keep social media outside of your website?: i use social media a bit. mainly twitter. it is easier and i don't have many connections here, anyway.
43. How about instant messengers? Do you use a mainstream one like Discord or Telegram? Or something like Matrix? Do you avoid them?: i use discord to text alice a lot
44. Do you listen to music while you work on websites? If so, what kinds of artists?: sometimes. right now i am not. usually it is radiohead or stone temple pilots or...whatever i want to listen to.
45. Do you keep everything you make on one website, or do you have more than one?: can't afford another website. even then, i don't really see myself making another.
46. On a similar note, do you keep to one topic on your site, or many?: hm. what is considered a topic is vague...this is all personal stuff. but page by page it varies a bit
47. Do you present your real self, or at least try? Or do you construct a persona on purpose?: i like to think this is how i'd act if social anxiety was not a thing.
48. Have you ever made a good friend thanks to your website?: No
49. Are you happy with the way HTML and CSS currently work?: yes. good enough for me.
50. What are practices that you think people should avoid?: i don't like to police what other people do. except autoplay music. Stop.
51. What about under-utilised practices, or things you think people should do more?: i am not super educated on what other people do code wise...i think adding notes to your code is very useful at times and i don't see it much in inspect element.
52. Do you use a lot of semantic HTML? Or are you guilty of generic structure?: i don't even know what semantic html is.
53. Do you consider different browsers?: chrome is easiest, but every now and then i get very paranoid that the government is tracking me and reconsider. i use firefox for piracy.
54. Speaking of, what's your preferred browser? Convince your readers why they should use it.: chrome. i will not try and convince you because it sucks.
55. And what OS are you on?: windows
56. Do you have a strong opinion on that, or do you just happen to use it?: i happen to use it.
57. Are your websites mobile-friendly?: not at all. sorry
58. What are your thoughts on autoplay?: it can be used for atmospheric stuff, but if you'd like to blast your music in my ears i will Murder you
59. What are your thoughts on webrings? Are you in any?: they are nice little things to have on your website, i think. i don't know where to find them, really. i am in radioring because of course
60. Do you have any web shrines? What do you like to see in that sort of page?: i prefer shrines be more artsy and graphic focused than info dumpy but. i digress. i have that one to radiohead and that is all for now.
61. Are your websites "cliche", in your opinion?: possibly
62. What is your ideal website? Are you striving for that, or for something else?: radiohead.com in the year 2000. i don't intend to copy them exactly though. a little off center. you need your own identity.
63. Are you an artist? Do you draw or design your own assets?: i draw sometimes. every artist ever says that. i generally don't design my own assets, but if needed i will. depends on what the asset even is.
64. What are your favourite resource sites?: tumblr
65. Is there a habit you just can't get away from no matter how hard you try?: in regards to coding or in real life? listing out either would be embarassing.
66. What's your biggest advice for a new webmaster?: don't worry about anything too much. unless you intend to build some sort of professional type thing, if it looks like shit that is fine. there are plenty of freaks like me out there that like the look.
67. Do you keep all your styling in CSS? Or do you hard-code some?: depends. usually in css but if i am adding things in after they might be hard coded.
68. What do you think of frameset layouts?: indifferent.
69. How about table-based layouts?: also indifferent.
70. Do you subscribe to the ideas of "one-column", "two-column" and "three-column" layouts? Do you use any of these?: i don't subscribe or hit that bell for notifications
71. Do you spend longer on the HTML or the CSS?: css usually, because i have no idea what i am doing. html is pretty simple.
72. Have you ever made a page with no CSS? It's useful for your thoughts.: this is one. or. it was going to be but i changed it for ease of reading. still, very barebone.
73. Do you ever find yourself making layouts with nothing to put on them? Or do you only make layouts when the need arises?: only when needed.
74. Would you consider yourself a beginner? Or advanced? Somewhere in the middle?: beginner, beginner, beginner.
75. Do you have a habit of looking at the source code of websites you visit?: sometimes, if i am curious. it is not really a habit.
76. How did YOU learn how to make websites?: looking things up. i am still learning, really.
77. Do you ever force elements to do things they're not supposed to?: if there is a will there is a way
78. Thoughts on floating elements?: useful
79. When you're sizing stuff, what do you use first? Do you use px, em, %, or something else?: pixels. almost always.
80. Do you have a favourite font?: kogusi maru. and courier new.
81. Would you run a website with another person? How would that work?: i am not the social type. so. probably not. the entire point of this is for creative freedom.
82. Do you surf the Web to find new personal websites very often?: when in need of inspiration, yes.
83. Do you bookmark other people's websites? How would you feel knowing someone else bookmarked yours?: i would be flattered. i don't bookmark things often, really.
84. What do you want people to be most impressed with when they see your website?: think i am cool and mysterious.
85. Are you interested in technology outside of websites? Do you collect?: i am a big music geek, so cds and vinyls come with that. i prefer cds and i burn them myself most of the time. i find old tech neat but i do not have the money to buy old crt televisions and such. everything is bar codes now and it annoys me.
86. How often and for how long are you online?: if i have nothing else to do, the whole day. if i can find anything else to do then. usually not much.
87. When it comes to your website, who is your target audience?: i...don't know. i am not. selling a product or something.
88. Have you ever been interested in XHTML?: no no no no no
89. Do you program in general? Have you ever written a program for use with or on your website, not counting simple JavaScript?: not at all. roblox studio at most. i wrote that chatbot and that is about it.
90. Speaking of programs that help you make websites, what do you think of static site generators (SSGs)? Have you ever used one?: neat. use one if you like i guess.
91. Do you keep a hitcounter? Why or why not?: i do, for fun.
92. Do you frequent forums? Which ones?: no. i don't like forums.
93. Do you write your page content directly into the editor, or do you prepare it elsewhere, like a text document or a Word document?: if it is complex (has more than two div classes) then i use a preview tool. if not i just write it.
94. Do you think you appear cool to others? A more accurate answer now: do other people ever say you're cool?: i hope.
95. Are you embarrassed of your old work? Have you ever deleted everything out of shame?: in a few years i will probably be.
96. Would you close down your website if you couldn't update it, or would you leave an archive?: i'd leave it to be forgotten.
97. Do you reveal a lot about yourself on your website? Or are you more secretive?: i consider myself a secretive person, but i do spill a lot on here. i need somewhere to share my thoughts.
98. Are you willing to reveal who your best online friend is, and/or if they have a website?: alice. she is my best friend period. she is not a webmaster because she is normal and not a geek like me. i owe my life to her.
99. And do you optimise the images on your website?: Fuck no.
